Personality:
For most of Hiccup's life, he's been the awkward, odd kid out, known to all of Berk as the village embarrassment. Vikings were meant to be strong, and tough, and able to fight off dragons with their bare hands. Hiccup however, was none of these things. He was small, and physically weak, and couldn't hope to fight a dragon to save his life. All of who he was wasn't what Vikings were supposed to be, and this has had a profound effect on who Hiccup is. And even though he has recently gained the respect of the tribe in his own way, Hiccup is still getting used to this new change in how people regard him.
Having grown up as the 'village embarrassment', Hiccup has developed quite a few insecurities. The fact that he's the son of the chief has made this even worse, since it wasn't just about him failing in the eyes of the village, but in the eyes of his father. As a result, Hiccup developed a desire to prove himself that goes to extreme levels. Since 'everything around here is about killing dragons', that's what Hiccup sets out to do - and lacking the ability to fight them himself, he builds siege weaponry to do it for him. And then he disregards the orders of his father and Gobbler by getting out there to try and take down a dragon, and inevitably ends up causing more problems in the process. And it's implied that he does this, over and over.
But this need to prove himself ultimately doesn't override Hiccup's own ability to emphasise and feel compassion for other people and creatures. Even though it would gain him instant respect and solve all of his problems of worth in his father's eyes, Hiccup chooses not to kill a dragon. He chooses this because he sees that the dragon, just like him, is scared. Even if someone is completely different from Hiccup, and even what he's been brought up to believe is his sword enemy, he is still able to feel empathy for them. More than that - he'll actively help them out. He didn't need to keep checking up on Toothless, feed him fish, and help him fly again, but Hiccup did anyway. This doesn't mean that he'll just emphasise with everybody - Hiccup does kill the Red Death, because that dragon absolutely was threatening the entire village, and if he hadn't they would have all died. But given the chance, he'll give other people a chance too.
Choosing not to kill a dragon doesn't just override his need to prove himself the once, however. It causes him to realise that he's just not going to be able to gain respect the way he thinks he needs to do so, and try to tell his father that he doesn't want to fight dragons anymore. In the end, through the events of the film Hiccup loses a lot of that extreme drive - although that need to be useful and respected is still there. But it not longer gets to extreme, unhealthy levels, and he's able to prioritise more important things over that need.
One thing that didn't change though, is Hiccup's dry and sarcastic wit. This, like his insecurities, developed as a response to unsteady place in the village. He couldn't match the other vikings physically, but he sure could match them in deadpan sarcasm. And intelligence - which admittedly isn't a trait the vikings are particularly known for.
But there are some viking traits Hiccup definitely possesses. Sheer stubbornness, for one. As evident by the fact that even before the events of the movie, he was clearly making constant attempt to take down a dragon, and failing at all of them. And yet, he kept on going. He's also pretty gutsy too, and brave. After all, taking on the Red Death is no walk in the park, and he took it on alone. Not to mention that it actually takes much more bravery to put down your weapons and try to befriend a creature that you've been brought up to believe is your mortal enemy, that will only ever hurt and kill you, than it does to kill it.
Powers/Abilities:
Hiccup is highly intelligent, with a great aptitude for inventing and mechanical engineering. He is admittedly limited by the level of technology that he's familiar with - being a Viking, more modern technologies are alien to him - but he's shown an ability to understand and develop his own technologies, such as when he builds and refines Toothless's artificial tailfin, or when he builds the siege weapon that took down Toothless in the first place. He gets the skills and ability to actually build his inventions from his role as a blacksmith's apprentice - so in addition to his own inventions, Hiccup is also very knowledgeable about smithing, weapons and armour crafting, and weapons maintenance.
He's also very observant - he gained considerable knowledge about dragons just from watching and interacting with Toothless. That knowledge he was then able to apply to other dragons. He's methodical, using logic and reason to work his way through problems.
Hiccup also does have a decent ability at drawing - he's nothing spectacular, but he can make a pretty accurate representation of what he observes in real life. But for Hiccup drawing isn't really about art: he uses it more for technical drawings and for recording, rather than for making anything that's meant to be artistic.
He does have some aptitude for leadership and strategy, as shown by when he's able to come up with and co-ordinate a plan to defeat the Green Death with his friends. He's not really a charismatic leader, but if people are willing to follow him he's very capable of taking their strengths and weaknesses and putting them to good use.
However, when it comes to fighting, Hiccup is pretty much useless.
TOOTHLESS
Coming with Hiccup is Toothless, a Night Fury dragon. In many ways a significant part of Hiccup's 'abilities' comes from the fact that he has a giant flying fire-shooting lizard that will (usually) does what he says. Toothless's personality and abilities thus are detailed below:
Personality
Toothless is very intelligent, but he is nonetheless an animal: he exhibits many animal behaviours, and while he seems to be understand quite a few words and phrases, he doesn't possess any kind of language ability.
For the most part, Toothless is playful and curious. He takes great interest in Hiccup's stick-drawings (and even tries to re-create his own), and also appears to have at times taken Hiccup's attempts to put a saddle on him as meaning 'time to play chase'. He is by nature a very friendly creature, although when first meeting someone he may be wary of them.
If someone appears threatening though - or endangers Hiccup in any way - Toothless can quickly become aggressive. He's extremely loyal and protective of Hiccup, and will absolutely attack someone who attacks Hiccup.
Toothless is also very much capable of holding a grudge - although if someone says they're sorry, he's quick to forgive.
Abilities
Firstly, Toothless is a dragon - so he's a giant flying reptile, about 20 feet long with a wingspan of just over twice that. He's extremely fast and manoeuvrable, even on the ground, but in the air he's capable of flying rings around other dragons. In fact, Night Fury's like Toothless are the only dragon able to do vertical takeoffs.
Unlike other dragons though, Toothless is missing a tail-fin, which renders him unable to fly on his own. He is only capable of flight with the artificial tail-fin that Hiccup made for him, and with Hiccup operating it.
Toothless's skin is made up of very dark scales, which serves to act both as a protective hide and as camouflage at night. In the darkness, Toothless is practically impossible to see.
He also has excellent night-vision and hearing, and in fact seems to be able to use a kind of sonar to locate the island where the Green Death and the other dragons nested.
He can also shoot a fire which appears to be a kind of plasma. This fire will explode on contact, and is apparently "an acetylene oxygen flame burning off of a semi-solid mass". Toothless has a very fine level of control over both the size and heat of the blasts, either attacking at deadly levels or just making a small burst. This kind of explosive fire always burns blue/purple - Toothless can also make a normal heat fire, which burns red/orange. However, this fire isn't as powerful as his explosive fire, and is generally only used when Toothless wants to set something alight.
All of this together makes Toothless a formidable fighter. Night Fury's are known in particular for their dive bombing techniques, where they dive down in the darkness from a great height to deliver a burst of fire - which never misses - before disappearing back into the night. And even on the ground Toothless is tough, being able to take on a Monstrous Nightmare, the dragon that only the best Vikings can take on, and Stoik himself.
He also has retractable teeth. Why exactly they are able to retract isn't known.

Oh gods, it's a magic book. Oh no. This is not good. This is so not good. It's probably cursed or haunted or...Toothless, don't touch that!
[And now something else comes into view - the size of the screen makes it hard to see, but it's big, and black, and scaly. And it's come to look at the book with one big, yellow eye that fills up the entire screen. The creature makes a curious, almost questioning purring noise.]
Toothless, no!
[The feed becomes a whirl of scrambled images as the viking apparently attempts to wrestle the creature away from the 'magic book', and the feed ends]
Log Sample:
When Hiccup wakes to find himself in a strange, metal container, his first thought is to wonder about the amazing craftsmanship of it. His second thought is that he isn't wearing any clothes, he's stuck in a box, and now is the time to panic.
"Aaaaaahhh!" He yells, pushing forward on the lid of the container and stumbling forward when it opened...only to fall flat on his face. His foot - where is his foot?! He can't walk without his foot! Oh gods, he's naked and he doesn't have his foot. If he wasn't so terrified he'd be dying from embarrassment right now.
But what's in that box? Hiccup crawls over to it, opening it up to find - his foot! And clothes! "Ooooh thank you gods, thank you thank you thank you..." And here's his horned helmet, and a small book that Hiccup doesn't recognise, and - Toothless's saddle and tailfin?
But where is Toothless?
However he got here, is Toothless here too? He - he has to find out. Even if this whole place looks like it belongs in one of the other realms, he can't leave Toothless on his own. So he puts on his leg and clothes and helmet, and gathers up the book and Toothless's things, and sets out.
Meanwhile, over by the cargo bays, Toothless has just tumbled out of his own contained, albeit one much larger than Hiccup's. And the dragon is not happy. This place is strange, with strange smells and sounds.
And no Hiccup.
With a roar of fear and anger, Toothless scrambles around, clawing over walls and floors. Is Hiccup here? Why isn't Hiccup here? Where is he! Where, where, where?
He has to get out! Out, out!
Toothless blast's at one of the walls, scorching it. It doesn't make a hole, but it momentarily makes Toothless feel better. But Hiccup still isn't there, so it doesn't last.
He tears down the corridors with a roar. Toothless will find Hiccup!
